Archibald Holmes was the founder of the Exotics for Democracy, colloquially referred to as the Four Aces.

History Edit

Archibald Holmes was a diplomat working with the U.S. Government, heading up a relief agency in Europe after the Second World War, when the wild card struck New York. He was hastily relocated to the city and attached to a group of military and experts (including Dr. Tachyon) to help with the relief efforts there. It was at this time when he met the young ace, Jack Braun who had been seen volunteering assistance to the aid workers.

Holmes came to the realisation that the prodigious talents of aces could be used to make the world a better place in a way that conventional efforts could not and set about founding a group of aces to help him in his cause. His first recruits were Braun and Earl Sanderson, both veterans of WWII. Braun's strength and invulnerability provided muscle for the group and Sanderson could fly and maintain a protective force field around himself. A young chess hustler from New York with the ability to convince people to do whatever he asked, David Harstein was soon added to the group. The last recruit was found when Holmes approached his own god daughter, Blythe van Renssaeler in hospital and found that she had acquired the ability to absorb the personality and memories of other people.

Together, Holmes and his team had a string of successes, removing despot rulers from power and smoothing over diplomatic spats, but eventually their activities were brought to a halt. Following a debacle in China they were subpoenaed to appear before HUAC and accused of supporting communist interests. Holmes himself was imprisoned for contempt of Congress, despite never having committed a crime. After leaving prison he became an editor for the New Republic. He died in 1955 of lung cancer.
