Raul Esposito is a fictional character in the Wild Cards series of books.
Raul Esposito worked as a mob hitman for many years in Chicago before his card turned and he became joker. Fortunately he was able to conceal the mushrooms that grew on his skin, at least for a while, but discoveries of discarded mushrooms at two of his hits soon got people talking. Feeling the heat, he abandoned Chicago in 1971 for New York where he stood a better chance of living in obscurity among the joker population there. Even still, he found further criminal employment with the Gambione family during the 1970s.
In later years Esposito turned to his ability to produce mushrooms as a source of income, supplying restaurants, but never letting on where the mushrooms came from. He also encountered Maggie Graves, a teenage runaway who had likewise drawn a joker, and took her on as a ward. Together they acted as a team supplying steaks aged to perfection and mushrooms.
Wild Card TraitsEdit
Raul's skin grows a steady supply of mushrooms. The mushrooms grow mostly in dampness and in darkness, so their growth is mitigated during daylight hours and when his skin is dry. Raul can shave them off safely with a knife, and this simply leaves a patch of white skin behind.
Raul's skin grows a steady supply of mushrooms, but because they are prone to growing in darkness they are generally covered by his clothing.
In his days as a mob hitman, Esposito approached his work with a detached air - he couldn't afford to be soft in his line of work. His shrewd assessment of his surroundings allowed him to survive a dangerous occupation with the mob, both in Chicago and later in New York.
